WP3 - Snow variable retrieval

The main task in WP3 will be to develop and validate retrieval algorithms for relevant snow variables and tailor a snow model to the use of these for avalanche risk prediction. Snow variables of importance include snow grain size, snow surface temperature and snow wetness.

The temporal development of these variables will, under special conditions, also be essential, like the formation of surface hoar, a type of rime frost consisting of large snow crystals. Such a surface phenomenon could later result in a weak layer within the snow pack, thus a potential sliding layer of an avalanche.
